David Howell: Everything’s Fine

about

David and I had a great discussion on techniques, interpretation, and composer-performer consent in the development of this piece. David’s markings for articulation are actually very open to interpretation, led by the singer’s emotions. In some sections, I’ve used vocal fry, but that was my choice, and not a demand from the composition.

In short, one does not necessarily need to employ techniques that are “off the voice” to portray an emotion; this is a choice arrived by research of vocal health, and should always be a consensual decision among all artists, composers and singers, involved.
